The Hundred Languages of Children
The Hundred Languages of Children
The child
is made of one hundred.
The child has
a hundred languages
a hundred hands
a hundred thoughts
a hundred ways of thinking
of playing, of speaking.
A hundred always a hundred
ways of listening
of marveling of loving
a hundred joys
for singing and understanding
a hundred worlds
to discover
a hundred worlds
to invent
a hundred worlds
to dream.
The child has
a hundred languages
(and a hundred hundred hundred more)
but they steal ninety-nine.
The school and the culture
separate the head from the body.
They tell the child:
to think without hands
to do without head
to listen and not to speak
to understand without joy
to love and to marvel
only at Easter and at Christmas.
They tell the child:
to discover the world already there
and of the hundred
they steal ninety-nine.
They tell the child:
that work and play
reality and fantasy
science and imagination
sky and earth
reason and dream
are things
that do not belong together.
And thus they tell the child
that the hundred is not there.
The child says:
No way. The hundred is there.
Les cent langages de l'enfant
L'enfant
est fait de cent.
L'enfant a
une centaine de langages
une centaine de mains
une centaine de pensées
une centaine de façons de penser
de jouer, de parler.
Une centaine, toujours une centaine
de manières d'écouter
de s'émerveiller de l'amour
une centaine de joies
pour chanter et comprendre
une centaine de mondes
à découvrir
une centaine de mondes
à inventer
une centaine de mondes
à rêver.
L'enfant a
une centaine de langages
(Et plusieurs centaines de centaines de centaines d'autres)
Mais ils en volent 99.
L'école et la culture
séparent la tête du corps.
Ils disent à l'enfant:
de penser sans les mains
de faire sans la tête
d'écouter et de ne pas parler
de comprendre sans joie
d'aimer et d'admirer
seulement à Pâques et à Noël.
Ils disent à l'enfant:
de découvrir le monde déjà là
et de la centaine
ils volent 99.
Ils disent à l'enfant:
que le travail et le jeu
la réalité et la fantaisie
la science et l'imagination
le ciel et la terre
la raison et le rêve
sont des choses
qui ne vont pas ensemble.
Et ainsi, ils disent à l'enfant
que les cent ne sont pas là.
L'enfant dit:
Pas du tout. Les cent sont là.
